History
The idea of creating a new Hispanic/Latino organization in
the Tacoma-Pierce County area originated with three Latinos,
(Tony Abeyta, Arturo Biblarz PhD, and Jose Palmas) each with
long-standing associations with organizations, groups, and
boards within the South Puget Sound area. Informal meetings
to discuss the viability of such an organization began in
September 2000. Initially, the group focused on the educational
needs of our Hispanic/Latino youth enrolled in our public
schools both at the local and at the state level. In January
2001, the informal gatherings led to the first meeting of
what would later come to be known as Conexión Latina.
Today
Conexión Latinas focus includes the promotion
of political involvement, education, and the preservation
of la cultura. Active membership is comprised
of approximately 35 individuals representing a cross-section
of Latinos from various professions, occupations, and organizations
across the South Puget Sound area. Meetings are held regularly
at Centro Latino-Ser in Tacoma and alternate between the second
Saturday and Wednesday of every other month.
